The Freedom Center Leadership Academy takes place on the campus of Merritt College on Saturdays, and most school breaks, including Thanksgiving Break, Winter Holiday, Spring break and Summer. Often in a residential format, students spend days at a time engaged in study and practice of developing the self that is of ther selves—someone’s daughter, son, neighbor, co-worker or friend. Dr. King says that too many of us spend too much time, energy, and money on our external selves, and not enough time, energy and money on the development of the inner realm. The Leadership Academy develops the self that is of, for and dependent upon others.
Days of Gratitude: Thanksgiving Break (November 27-29, 2015): offer students an interactive overview of the origins of Thanksgiving Day. Participants discuss with students from diverse cultures and learn the role of Native Americans in the development of America. Students learn the value of gratitude in a successful life.
Life and Legacy of Dr. King Classes: Winter Break (December 27, 2015 – December 31, 2015): This five day Dr. King session is for students who desire knowledge of Dr. King. Student read, write and speak about Dr. King and his significance. Nonviolence teaches the development of self-control. It teaches us to learn how to learn.
